Top 5 Recommended hotels in Kolding, Denmark

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Kolding is an industrial city with shipbuilding one of its main businesses. Other businesses include machinery and textile manufacturing and livestock export. It is easier to find a hotel that is geared for business people than for family vacations and this is likely due to the industrial nature of the area. The top 5 recommended hotels in Kolding are:

First Hotel Kolding
The First Hotel is a basic hotel but it is clean and reasonably priced. It is part of one of the best hotel chains in Denmark. The rooms are pleasant but do not offer much other than the bed. There is no sofa to relax in while you chat. While some guests have not been impressed by the staff’s attitudes, other guests have praised the service. Also the breakfast is excellent.

Scandic Kolding South

This is a no frills hotel and there seems to be little attention to detail. But the price is reasonable. The restaurant prices were not so good and this is too bad as the restaurant does not have much else to recommend it. For instance, there is not a lot of choice of food. The breakfast, which is complementary, is surprisingly good given that the other meals are not so great.

Kolding Byferie
Kolding Byferie is situated on Lake Slottsö, which is beautiful and even has swans. There is also shopping a few meters from the hotel and the railway station is close to the building. Breakfast is not included in the price and it is not cheap but there are other restaurants close by. One of the good things is that you can rent a suite as well as a room. Since the rooms are small, the suite can easily accommodate you.

Hotel Koldingfjord
The Koldingfjord has large rooms and offers room service. There is an indoor swimming pool. It is an elegant place to stay and its closeness to the fjord makes for a great view.

Saxildhus Hotel
This is an historic hotel, more than 170 years old. The rooms are a good size and clean. The bathroom is very big which is a surprise as most Danish hotels seem to have small bathrooms. The location is very convenient location and the service is great. This is not the best price bargain in the area but the hotel does have a lot of charm, if you are into that kind of thing.

Top 5 Recommended hotels in Randers, Denmark

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Randers has a very long history – about a millennium long – and this shows in the architecture of the town which has half-timbered buildings dating back to the 1600s. While Randers is not considered a destination in itself, the town has enormous charm. The top 5 recommended hotels in Randers are:

Clarion Collection Hotel Kronjylland
This hotel gets rave reviews all the time. It is peaceful with large airy rooms. The staff is friendly and the breakfast is plentiful and healthy. The place is clean and located close to shopping, including supermarket shopping.

Scandic Hotel Kongens Ege
The Scandic Kongens Ege is just a few meters from the heart of Randers. It is near the cinema, the shopping area and the main restaurants in the town. There is the usual large (and free) breakfast and a better than average restaurant. On the downside, the rooms tend to be a little worn-out looking but they are clean.

Hotel Randers
The Hotel Randers is actually on the shopping street so that is very convenient for guests. This means that it is also close to the restaurant area. When you book your room, be aware that the single rooms are very small. They can only accommodate a single bed. The hotel is old and does show signs of its age but it has a charm to it that makes up for the worn-out look. The food is good but the service tends to be slow.

Fladbro Kro
If you choose to stay at the Fladbro Kro you are in good company. Hans Christian Andersen stayed here in 1857 and loved it. The hotel was old even then, having been in service since 1737. It has always had the reputation of quality service and quality food. Of course, it has been updated to meet the current standards for comfort and cleanliness. It is set in a lovely area, near two little rivers, Gudenå and Nørreå. There is also a golf course nearby.

Motel 1
Motel 1 is a self-service motel where you can check in using one of the automated machines at the motel. The credit card you check in with opens your door and also allows you access to the breakfast restaurant. You can book a room for up to 5 people and if you want to stay for more than one night or if you are part of a larger group, you can make prior arrangements. The rooms are non-smoking rooms and the accommodations come with a daily newspaper, a desk, and satellite/cable TV.

Top 5 Recommended hotels in Gladsaxe

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Gladsaxe has a population of 62,000 and is considered to be a lively city with a rich cultural and social life as well as natural surroundings that are beautiful. When it comes to accommodations in Gladsaxe, there are not a lot of choices. Of the following reviews, only the Leda is located right in Gladsaxe. The other hotels are not far from Gladsaxe so they can meet your accommodation needs for Gladsaxe.

Leda
The Leda Hotel is conveniently located near transport routes, the airport and the downtown area of this Kopenhagen suburb. The hotel atmosphere is cozy, historical and sophisticated without being overwhelmingly so. Gladsaxe is considered a posh area of the country and as such is not heavily endowed with chain hotels.

Scandic Eremitage
In nearby Lyngby, the Scandic chain hotel is a good choice for those visiting the Gladsaxe area. It is located in a suburban shopping mall which offers a lot of convenience for those who want choices in basic restaurants and the ease of shopping. The Eremitage may be a little run down with the wear and tear showing in the floors and the rooms but the staff is friendly and helpful and the breakfast is great. The most important aspects of hotels is the beds and these beds are wonderful.

Hotel Frederiksdal
Another Lyngby hotel, the Frederiksdal is set on the river, near the lake. This location is the best part of the hotel so ask for a lakeside room. Otherwise, the hotel does not offer anything too spectacular in the way of rooms or food.

Hotel Ebeltoft Strand
The hotel is locat in Ebeltoft, about 11 km from Gladsaxe. It is a sprawling low-rise hotel and all the rooms overlook the sea. The ground floor rooms open right into the garden and a path to the sea shore. The rooms are large and there is a great play area for children outside and a children’s room inside with video games and other things for children to play with.

Hotel Wittrup Motel
Wittrup Motel is located at Albertslund, about 13 km from Gladsaxe. It is easy to travel from the Wittrup to any of the Kopenhagen region as there is a lot of public transportation as well as roads and highways. It is close to Vestskoven forest and the Ishøj beach. The Wittrup was founded by an American so the style is American.

Top 5 Recommended hotels in Gentofte, Denmark

Monday, June 7th, 2010

Gentofte is an upscale suburb of Kopenhagen but the hotel prices are somewhat lower than in the heart of Kopenhagen. Nevertheless they are not cheap as Danish costs are generally higher than in some other countries and certainly higher than in the United States. The top 5 recommended hotels in Gentofte are:

Gentofte Hotel
The Gentofte is a charming little place that is very clean and the rooms are a good size. They are large enough to contain a big chair and a desk as well as the bed. The hotel also provides free wifi. The food is not as good as in some other places but guests have praised the breakfast (not included in the price of the room). (Hotel details and price comparison here..)

Hellerup Parkhotel
The Hellerup is in the middle of Gentofte. This makes it quite convenient and of course it is near Kopenhagen which makes it even more convenient. However the rooms are not large and that is a bit of an understatement. In one review, the guest reports having to put the mattress on the floor as the bed itself was too cramped in an alcove of the room. There is free wifi and also free internet terminals on each floor. (Hotel details and price comparison here..)

Skovshoved
While not the cheapest of the hotels in the area, this is a seaside (one block from the beach) hotel that is only 15 minutes by bus to the center of Kopenhagen. The staff is gracious and welcoming. The place has a historic feel while being quite modern at the same time. The rooms have little extras such as sweet and Molten Brown toiletries. The food is excellent. (Hotel details and price comparison here..)

Schæffergården
This hotel is located in an 18th century hunting lodge. The rooms all overlook a park and are well equipped with a work desk and a tea/coffee maker along with the standard cable TV. The location is lovely and a vacation in itself. Even though it is in the suburbs, it is only 8 km from the center of Kopenhagen and very close to the Jægersborg Dyrehave Park where you can canoe and go horseback riding.

Bernstorff Palace
The hotel is actually an 18th-century palace. It was the summer residence of Christian IX of Denmark until 1906 and a lot of the old majesty of the place still lingers. For instance, there is a rose garden and an orangery. As well as being historic and beautiful, Bernstorff Palace is convenient. You can walk to Gentofte Station in less than 20 minutes and the Copenhagen Central Station is a mere eight stops away.

Top 5 Recommended hotels in Esbjerg, Denmark

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Esbjerg is the Denmark’s largest port and has a population of 85,000. It has great streets to tour such as the pedestrian-only Kongensgade street. Esbjerg is the home of Legoland.

Hjerting Badehotel
This hotel is located about 9 km from the center of Esbjerg and has a lovely view of Ho Bay. The hotel has been restored to its original seaside hotel style. It is a comfortable hotel with great food. It is right on the beach the seaside experience is wonderful. The price is reasonable for the area (around $175USD). (Hotel details and price comparison here..)

Hotel Ansgar
Hotel Ansgar is right in the heart of Esbjerg at Torvet square. It is not far from the forest or the beach. There is an 18-hole golf course nearby and also a pedestrian shopping district. The service is excellent and the staff seems willing to go the extra mile for the guests. This is a lovely central hotel.

Britannia Hotel
Hotel Britannia rooms are modern and have all the usual conveniences including wireless internet access. It is close to the train and bus terminals. The beds are notably comfortable and the rooms are clean and sunny. The accommodations and service are excellent for the relatively low price. The only thing to note is that with centrally located convenience, you do run the risk of traffic noise. (Hotel details and price comparison here..)

Olympic Esbjerg City Scandic
The Scandic Olympic hotel is located close to Esbjerg harbor and the ferry link. It is part of the Scandic chain and a lovely comfortable place to stay. It is clean and modern. Some guests have mentioned that the rooms are not all renovated and the place does get hot at night but you can open the windows to cool off the room. If you like the harbor view, ask for a room on the front of the hotel. The food is good at the Scandic Olympic but there are other choices of eating places within walking distance. (Hotel details and price comparison here..)

Cabinn Esbjerg
The Cabinn Esbjerg is just a few meters from the main shopping street, Kongensgade, in Esbjerg. The hotel was rejuvenated in 2005 and is a top notch chain hotel with budget rooms as well as large suites. All the Cabinn Esbjerg rooms are non-smoking rooms. The hotel has also tried successful to install soundproofing so that the convenience of location is not overrun by the sound of traffic and pedestrians outside the hotel. (Hotel details and price comparison here..)

Top 5 Recommended hotels in Frederiksberg, Denmark

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Frederiksberg is just outside Kopenhagen and since hotel prices in Kopehagen are fairly expensive some people opt to stay in Frederiksberg. The top 5 recommended hotels in Frederiksberg – well there are really only 4 recommended hotels in but the fifth one mentioned here is only a kilometer and a half outside of Frederiksberg in Kobenhavn – are:

Cabinn Scandinavia
This is a reasonably priced hotel but the rooms are small and so are the beds. The good news is that it is peaceful, close to the lakes and in walking distance to the center of the town. It is also close to the metro for those who may want to travel into Kopenhagen. The place is clean and breakfast is included breakfast. It is considered a no-frills hotel so for that standard it is pretty good. (Details and price comparison here..)

Avenue Hotel
The Avenue Hotel is situated on a busy main road and this means that rooms on the front might be noisy. If you are staying in Frederiksberg to save money on your vacation to Kopenhagen, remember that this is a suburban area and you will need transportation to get into the heart of the city or to the Tivoli Gardens. This is a pleasant place to stay and the staff is excellent. (Details and price comparison here..)

Cabinn Express
This is the express version of the Cabinn Scandinavia and as such is really a no frills hotel. The rooms are small. There is barely enough room for a double bed and the bathroom is very compact with a sink and toilet and shower. However the rooms do have a kettle, mugs, and tea and coffee. The reception area closes at 11 p.m. It is about a 10 minute walk to Tivoli. (Details and price comparison here..)

Hotel Euroglobe
The Hotel Euroglobe is rather hostel-like. For instance, there are two bathrooms and two WC on each floor. These are separate from each other. Every room has a washing basin with hot and cold water. There are family rooms with four beds, three beds, large twin rooms and single rooms. (Details and price comparison here..)

Bertrams Hotel Guldsmeden (in Kobenhavn)
This is a charming hotel but for some the charm is a little too rustic while for others four-poster beds and clawfoot bathtubs are romantic. Guests praise the breakfast and there is tea and coffee served free all day long. It is a 15 minute walk from downtown Kopenhagen. This is more of a B&B than a hotel but it is a delightfully pleasant place. (Details and price comparison here..)

Top 5 Recommended Hotels in Aalborg, Denmark

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

These are the top 5 recommended hotels in Aalborg. Of course, the prices are not cheap to those unaware of the cost of living in Denmark. The prices tend to run in the mid to high $200s range. Aalborg is the third largest city in Denmark.

First Slotshotel
This is a top-rated hotel with modern rooms with the usual amenities including a minibar. The hotel has a solarium, a fitness room, a sauna and even table tennis. The best part (for most) is the location which is by the harbor which offers a great view and close to shopping. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Scandic Aalborg
This is one of the cheapest deals in Aalborg but the experience has been compared to being in a youth hostel. Actually it does look like a former school with wide staircases and basic rooms. There is no elevator and the beds are narrow. It is close to the airport but kind of isolated from other amenities. For instance, there are few other restaurant choices around. But parking is free and so is breakfast. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Helnan Phønix Hotel
The Helnan Phoenix offers an interesting experience because the 18th-century red brick building has served as a hotel since 1853. Not only is it historic, the hotel is located 500 meters from the center of Aalborg. It provides rooms with high speed internet access, cable tv, and a minibar. There is a great buffet breakfast and a very comfortable bar. It is worth mentioning that some guests have complained about the cleanliness of the rooms. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Zleep Hotel Aalborg
This hotel is part of a chain and is conveniently located being close to the city center as well as close to the airport. However, it helps to have a car to get to either. There is wireless internet service as well as a Net Café. In spite of being part of a chain, the hotel is a 70s style building. This actually makes it have a bit more personality than a typical chain hotel. (Details and price comparison here..)

Best Western Hotel Scheelsminde
The Best Western Hotel Scheelsminde was once one of Denmark’s manors. It was built in 1808 and is quite an historical building and beautifully situated in a large park. It has all of the amenities and there is a bus stop for a bus that takes you to the center of the city in less than 10 minutes. It is one of the cheaper hotels in the city but some guests have been critical of the cleanliness of the rooms. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Top 5 Recommended hotels in Odense, Denmark

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

These are the top 5 recommended hotels in Odense. The choice ranges from the basic to the chain-type hotels. All of these are in the standard economy price range.

Ydes Hotel
The price at the Ydes is about the lowest you will find but you might think that are a couple of odd things about this hotel. For instance, instead of a reception area, there is a buzzer. The reception person then comes to you from the hotel down the street or else you are invited to go up the street to the other hotel to get registered. It is a no frills hotel and the rooms are not large. The bathrooms are small and not a lot of linen is supplied and no toiletries are supplied.

First Grand Hotel
There are two main benefits to this place. One is the breakfast which is considered to be a very good spread with fruit, eggs, meat, bread and pastries. The other benefit is the convenience of location which is essentially in a pedestrian mall. However, not all the rooms are in the main hotel which is attached to the mall. Most of the rooms are in an annex. For some the trek from the main hotel to the annex is not a pleasing experience because it involves traveling through two buildings to get to it. The rooms are very basic but clean. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Domir
Another good place to stay and the price is reasonable. However be aware that if you pay with a credit card, you will be charged a 6 percent service charge. This can add up. The service and food are both fine. The rooms are clean and comfortable and have all the necessities including an iron, a safe, a tv, and a radio. It is close to both the center of the city and the train station. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Clarion Hotel Plaza
The price is, like the other hotels in this review, reasonable by Odense standards and the Clarion is elegant in an old-fashioned style. There is free internet in the rooms and other little touches that make this a nice place to stay. One of the downsides is that if you open the windows for fresh air, the sound of the traffic on the ring road next to the hotel might keep you awake. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Cab Inn
This is another centrally located hotel (two minutes from the train station) and that is a very good thing. It is also recently renovated which adds to the bright, clean appearance of the Cab Inn. There is free wireless internet in the rooms, which tend to be small. Breakfast is not cheap and there are not a lot of cafes in the area but the price is in keeping with the cost in other Odense restaurants. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Top 5 Recommended Hotels in Aarhus, Denmark

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Choosing a hotel in Aarhus relies a lot on your needs and wants. There is a variety of hotel styles in this Danish city. It must be noted that none of these hotels are really cheap but their prices are standard fare for Denmark. These are the top 5 recommended hotels in Aarhus.

Aarhus Comfort Hotel Atlantic
The Aarhus Comfort Hotel Atlantic is ideally located, close to everything including the art museum and concert hall as well as the Gold Club Casino. The price is a little lower than neighboring hotels. Nevertheless, the hotel offers a free buffet breakfast, daily newspaper, and laundry service. Pets are welcome. (more information here..)

Aarhus Hotel La Tour
La Tour Hotel in Aarhus is considered one of the best choices when it comes to price. The rates are low but the quality is high although some people have complained about the cleanliness of the rooms, noticing dust and grungy looking furniture. As well as a free breakfast, the hotel also offers a fitness center, pet services, and internet. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Aarhus Hotel Helnan Marselis
The Hotel Helnan Marselis is located besides Marselisborg Forest and Aarhus Bay (and its beach). For a modern hotel, it has a lovely country aspect and is considered very nature-conscious. Calling it modern may not be entirely accurate because while it has amenities such as free internet and cable, the rooms do look old fashioned and for some people the dated look takes away from the positive current aspects of the hotel. It also provides pet services, a fitness center, swimming pool, and beach access. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Aarhus Plaza Hotel
The Plaza Hotel in Aarhus is part of the Scandic hotel chain. What this hotel has that the others reviewed here don’t have is a children’s play area and children stay for free. It also has a jacuzzi, solarium, and sauna. It boasts South-American fare in its restaurant which is considered to be very good. There are five room sizes and it is not recommended to book the single room size (the smallest size) as it is very small. Also don’t book a room on the main floor as it can be quite noisy. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Hotel Guldsmeden
One of the aspects of the Hotel Guldsmeden that sets it apart is that it is not part of a chain like so many of the hotels in Aarhus. The rooms are not large – even the largest room is barely a double according to typical hotel standards. However it is centrally located and people rave about the breakfast that the hotel provides. The street side of the hotel is noisy at night but the court yard side is very quiet. (Details and Price comparison here..)

Top 5 Recommended Hotels to stay in Copenhagen, Denmark

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Looking for a hotel in Kopenhagen can be a challenge for anyone who has never visited the area but this is true of any place. One of the best ways to choose a hotel in a city that you are unfamiliar with is to check the reviews for hotels in that city. Of course, different reviews will appeal to different people. A business person is looking for a different experience than a vacationing family is seeking.

These are the top 5 recommended hotels in Kopenhagen:

Crowne Plaza Hotel Copenhagen Towers
The Crowne Plaza is highly rated and people who have stayed there say it is lovely and clean with large comfortable rooms. There is free parking and free WIFI. The décor is minimalist Scandanavian. The only complaint is the location. It is not near the center of the city and there is a lot of construction going on around the hotel. If you are there on business and want no distractions, it will be ideal. But to get to the center of action, you will need to take a taxi or a train. (more info here)

Nimb Hotel
This Nimb Hotel receives rave reviews from people who stay there. They praise the rooms, the service, and the location. Even the pickiest traveler is hard pressed to find something to complain about here. The rooms even have open fireplaces and a staff member will come and light it for you. (more info here)

Hilton Copenhagen Airport
The reviews of this excellent hotel deem it to be ideally located for those flying into Kopenhagen. You can literally roll your luggage into the hotel directly from the airport without going outside. While it is not close to the center of the city, you can hop on the Metro or the train and in 15 minutes you are in the heart of the city. The rooms and service are delightful. Executive guests get free internet but there is a charge equivalent to $25USD to other guests for the use of the internet. (more info here)

Somandshjemmet Bethel
If you are looking for a place that is not quite as pricey, the Somandshjemmet Bethel is the right choice. It is not a luxury hotel. But what it lacks in niceties such as glasses in your hotel room it more than makes up for with charm. Also it is just a few minutes to the exciting areas of the city such as canal rides and Tivoli as well as shopping, bars, and bistros. (more info here)

Radisson Blu Royal Hotel
The Radisson Blu is centrally located with the Tivoli and shopping nearby. The overall attitude of guests is that it is a lovely place to stay but the food is costly and the hotel needs to be seriously rejuvenated. But if you like the charm of an older hotel, the convenience of the shopping and closeness of other places to eat makes this a good choice. (more info here)
